Narrative
The Maynards and their children live a near-perfect billionaire family life. Amon is an avid hunter, but he doesn’t shoot animals because the family’s wealth allows them to live completely without consequences.
Ayn Rand: It’s About Who’s Gonna Stop You?
At the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, we saw filmmakers Daniel Hoesl and Juliane Niemann create an interesting satirical picture of the wealthy class, and while there are some good ideas, it seems underdeveloped and not as strong as the film. The production designs, camerawork, and color presentation are beautiful and truly beautiful, as they help capture the atmosphere and essence of the characters.
Many of the performances are solid, some of the children’s acting is a bit weak
Hoesl and Niemann’s direction, while a bit chaotic, clearly sees the style and atmosphere they are approaching. The narrative is a good concept, but unfortunately it feels strong in the way it thinks because the narrative feels underdeveloped in terms of some themes and characters.
I don’t feel committed or interested in an emotional connection
It’s like there were good ideas that didn’t really spark the potential they wanted. There are moments that are jarring, edgy, and downright bizarre, and I understand where the filmmakers are coming from and I understand their vision.
But it could have been stronger
But I don’t feel it’s fully deserved, and the style is too similar to something by Ruben Ostlund or Michael Haneke. Overall it’s not bad because there are moments that I appreciate.
