For those who aren’t familiar or unaware of a plot technique called “mystery boxing,” mystery boxing is a method used by writers to incorporate mysteries and/or secrets into a storyline or story arc to keep the audience engaged and involved in the overall narrative, while also offering “prizes” for viewers who must successfully guess the contents of a mystery box before or when it is finally opened or revealed. The entire plot of SILO is a vast minefield of mystery boxes that the viewer must CLAWS and TAILS their way through.
The main premise or mystery box of SILO is very similar to that of LOST
The true art and success of using mystery boxes depends on the viewer’s tolerance for the frequency of the mystery boxes being placed and when the mystery boxes are finally opened to the audience. At the core of SILO, the question or main puzzle for the audience is, “Why is this community living in a man-made, post-industrial concrete hole in the ground?” The beginning of SILO is interesting. The opening “hook”, set design, acting, production values and cinematography are good if the viewer enjoys the overall dystopian genre with a muted tone.
SILO is primarily a character-driven drama that moves slowly and has some repetitive themes
The challenge for the viewer might be the fast paced assembly line of constant mystery box dumping and the overall slow pace of the plot. An Excel spreadsheet might also be helpful to keep track of all the mystery boxes dumped within episodes. Some viewers may appreciate the level of detail and pacing, while others’ attention spans may be overwhelmed.
