Narrative
The Chinese woman lives in silence for herself, celebrating the flowering of the Belle Epoque with song and dance. Reflections on love and the passage of time; a woman searches for her lost lover in the rubble of a deconstructed city, and also her own shattered memory. The Three Gorges Dam swallows up entire cities as time swallows people. Women sing and dance in joy and pain. Dreams rise to the surface only to sink again. Life changes and we often don’t notice. Using mostly B-roll fragments and outtakes from previous films, Zhang-ke weaves an intellectual and imaginative story. Even though I wish the material was entirely new and edited with a more coherent story in mind, I can’t deny that Zhang-ke has a magical and mesmerizing touch in everything he does, even on his wanderings. Seen at the Toronto International Film Festival.
