Brazil, 1971: a country ruled by a military dictatorship
A mother is forced to reinvent herself when her family’s life is destroyed by senseless violence. The first collaboration between Fernanda Montenegro and Walter Salles took place 26 years after the release of the film “The Main Dungeon” (1998), where Montenegro was nominated for the “Oscar” award for the best female role. Fernando Torres and Salles previously worked together in the film “Terra Estrangeira” (1995), 29 years ago.

The film, in which Fernando Torres plays the matriarch Eunice, tells about the horrors of the Brazilian dictatorship, but is not preachy or despotic
it actually enhances the book by focusing on the Paiva family and how each member is shaken and devastated by the disappearance of their father (played with deep love by Selton Mello). Focusing on the human aspects and the sense of loss of people who never received answers about the disappearance of their loved ones, the script becomes stronger as it develops. The entire performance of young actors at the highest level is a rarity in Brazilian cinema, but the incredibly restrained performance of Fernanda Torres really fascinates.
Captivating and touching, but not melodramatic, this is a masterpiece
